A Few Small Announcements

Not much to talk about this week, other than three small things: we have instructions up on how to set up a mirror of our apt repository, Drauger OS 7.4.1 is getting a kernel update to Version 5.3, and we are looking at including an ad blocker in Drauger OS 7.5.1!

Our instructions for the apt repository are designed to be fairly simple and straight forward. You can read the instructions on our wiki. All you have to do is download our script which sets up and update the apt repository for you, set a couple simple config files, and then set a cron job to run the script periodically.

As for the kernel update, this brings graphics updates for Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm GPUs, processor and file system optimizations, and a number of other hardware fixes, updates, and support inclusions.

Overall, you may see a performance improvement of anywhere from next to nothing, to 2-5% by our estimations, depending on your specific use case. In gaming, this will likely translate to slightly less micro-stuttering and maybe 1-3 FPS higher in certain games. However, in day to day usage, you will likely see no differences other than a higher version number in the package manager.

The ad blocker we mentioned is from another Linux distro, called antiX. We forked their work and are in the middle of modifying the code to follow our style and format, both in GUI, and in code. This ad blocker prevents your system from connecting to ad servers in the first place, so it may perform better than some traditional ad blockers. Furthermore, since it runs below any browsers, it’s ad blocking may end up working in other apps such as Spotify. However, we are not sure as of yet just how effective it really is. In our preliminary testing it seems to work decently well. After our refactoring is complete, we will test it out in Drauger OS 7.5.1 alpha 1. If it proves useful, expect it to be back-ported to Drauger OS 7.4.1, but it will not be included by default until 7.5.1 if this occurs.

I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any tips other than practice. WordPress is the better platform in my opinion due to being free, however it is easier to hack, so keep your passwords a decent length. Beyond that, this blog is kinda secondary to Drauger OS. Just a place to get news. So I don’t put as much emphasis on the blog as I do on the OS.
